Capcom and Disney are reportedly in discussions about reviving the critically-acclaimed fighting game Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. The two companies began discussing the possibility of remastering the title after prominent fighting game community member “Maximilian Dood” began the #FREEMVC2 campaign, in an attempt to garner enough community support to re-release the game on modern consoles.

Though considered one of the best fighting games released in recent years and a major staple in past competitive fighting game tournaments such as EVO, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 has been delisted from digital stores for almost a decade. Because of this, recent EVO tournaments have also ceased hosting MVC2 competitions due to the difficulty in acquiring the game by legal means.

However, that hasn’t stopped dedicated fighting game fans from urging the two companies to re-release the game. Earlier this year, Maximilian Dood posted on Twitter urging Capcom, Marvel (which is owned by Disney), and Digital Eclipse—a studio that has worked with Disney and Capcom in the past to remaster some of its classic titles—to revive Marvel vs. Capcom 2. The tweet garnered significant attention from fans and gamers alike. According to Digital Eclipse’s studio head Mike Mika, it even caught the attention of some folks at Disney and Capcom, too.

In an interview with GamerHubTV, Mika seems to suggest that Disney and Capcom have been “in communication” about the possibilities and that Digital Eclipse is involved in the talks as well. He tempers fan expectations, however, noting that the project would have significant legal ramifications due to the sheer amount of licensing costs involved. Mika notes that these costs could “often be as much, if not more, than the budget of the game itself.”

Fortunately, Mika himself seems entirely on board with the concept of re-releasing the game. And if Digital Eclipse is involved, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 would be in good hands; the studio previously worked on the rerelease of Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King, as well as other fighting games like Samurai Showdown and the SNK 4oth Anniversary Collection.
