Inside (Switch eShop)

Inside (Switch eShop)Inside (Switch eShop)

Publisher: Playdead / Developer: Playdead

Release Date: 28th Jun 2018 (USA) / 28th Jun 2018 (UK/EU)

90% off – was £17.99 / 19,99€, now £1.79 / 1,99€ until 30th Nov 2021

Inside is the spiritual successor to Limbo and it builds on its predecessor in every imaginable way. A grimly beautiful platform-puzzler that, while brief, is packed full of jaw-dropping highlights, its dark tone won’t be for everyone, but it’s been executed brilliantly, with gently taxing physics-based conundrums woven into a haunting wordless narrative. It’s a very similar game to its predecessor in many ways, with side-scrolling elements, a gorgeous, moody art style, and a vulnerable protagonist at the heart of it. Everything’s just bigger, better, and more affecting.

Unravel Two (Switch)

Unravel Two was already a wonderful little game, filled with heartfelt moments of poignant storytelling and challenging platforming puzzles, and then it found a fitting new home on Nintendo Switch. Even with a few downgrades to the visuals, Unravel Two is far from an inferior experience when played on Nintendo’s hybrid system. Full of charm and character, it’s one of the best co-operative platformers you can play anywhere, and another robust Switch port that was well worth the wait.

75% off – was £13.49 / 14,99€, now £3.37 / 3,75€ until 30th Nov 2021

Without saying a word, FAR: Lone Sails conveys a poignant tale of hope and perseverance, masterfully balancing style with substance for an experience that feels every bit as sublime as it looks. Sure, you could grumble about the its relative shortness, the occasionally obtuse puzzles and the very, very minor control issues, but these problems dissolve away once you’re invested in the journey. We highly recommend that you give this a spin.

Slime-san (Switch eShop)

Slime-san is a brilliantly snappy, charismatic and challenging title that manages to deliver a satisfying core game with tonnes of bonus extras to play around with besides. The controls are spot-on, the environments are varied and engaging, and while other platformers may have tread similar ground before, Slime-san weaves together so many different elements into a finely-crafted experience that it deserves a place among the best in the genre. That’s not even mentioning a handful of arcade game modes, a suite of options for speedrunning, and a soundtrack that almost warrants the price of admission alone. It represents immense value for money, and if you’re itching for something weird then the future is most certainly green.

In a cynical era where nostalgia is pumped for all its worth with endless soulless remasters, Katamari Damacy Reroll serves up an engaging and rewarding game that hasn’t let any of its original charm or personality be lost in the transition from one platform to another. With support for gyro controls and multiplayer – not to mention a degree of performance that sees it run smoothly in both handheld and docked mode – this Switch edition is easily the best way to play it outside of blowing the dust off your old PS2.

The Messenger (Switch eShop)

2D side-scrolling action games like The Messenger may be a dime a dozen these days, but you’d be missing out on something special by passing this one up. Featuring a surprisingly long campaign, an incredible soundtrack and tight, challenging level designs, The Messenger stands as a shining example of great game design. We’d highly recommend you pick this one up; it’s the very definition of a modern classic.

Danmaku Unlimited 3 (Switch eShop)

Publisher: Doragon Entertainment / Developer: Doragon Entertainment

Release Date: 13th Mar 2018 (USA) / 13th Mar 2018 (UK/EU)

50% off – was £8.09 / 8,99€, now £4.04 / 4,49€ until 30th Nov 2021

Danmaku Unlimited 3 is a brilliantly executed ‘best of’ bullet hell shmup ideas wrapped up into a phenomenal package. It is one of the very best shmups money can buy in the whole Switch game library. Even if you don’t particularity like shmups – or if Japanese bullet hells are not your particular favourite flavour within the genre – exposure to the insane lightshows provided by this game might just turn you into a die-hard fan. We can only fault one particular ‘glitch’: every other shmup on the system feels slow and dull in comparison.

Okami HD (Switch eShop)

Okami HD (Switch eShop)Okami HD (Switch eShop)

Publisher: Capcom / Developer: Capcom

Release Date: 9th Aug 2018 (USA) / 9th Aug 2018 (UK/EU)

50% off – was £15.99 / 19,99€, now £7.99 / 9,99€ until 30th Nov 2021

Okami HD is an utterly fantastic piece of software, and we feel you’d be doing yourself a disservice to pass on it. It’s a 40-hour adventure that emulates Zelda wonderfully, adds in plenty of memorable mechanics, features one of the most beautiful art styles in gaming, and is completely playable on the go, to boot. It may be showing its age a bit visually and its combat is sometimes a little on the easy side, but Okami is an important, fun, and notable landmark in gaming history — and one of the easiest recommendations we can make for your Switch library.

GRIS (Switch eShop)

GRIS (Switch eShop)GRIS (Switch eShop)

Publisher: Devolver Digital / Developer: Nomada Studio

Release Date: 13th Dec 2018 (USA) / 13th Dec 2018 (UK/EU)

60% off – was £14.49 / 16,99€, now £5.79 / 6,79€ until 30th Nov 2021

We’re very careful when we use this word, but Gris is a masterpiece. Its jaw-dropping visual style and heart-wrenching score combine for one of the most emotional pieces of interactive art you’ll ever play. It may be too short for some, its puzzles may be on the simple side and the lack of any real challenge may not be to everyone’s taste, but this is a game focused more on fragility than ability and as long as you’re willing to go along for the ride, it’s one that will stick with you for a very long time indeed.

And with eShop games plummeting to mere pennies, here’s our pick for a super cheap game that’s worth the memory space it takes up on your Switch…

Urban Flow (Switch eShop)

Urban Flow (Switch eShop)Urban Flow (Switch eShop)

Publisher: Baltoro Games / Developer: Baltoro Games

Release Date: 26th Jun 2020 (USA) / 26th Jun 2020 (UK/EU)

93% off – was £13.49 / 14,99€, now £0.89 / 0,99€ until 29th Dec 2021

Urban Flow‘s title isn’t a misnomer; the gameplay is as smooth as the graphics and once the pieces are in place you shouldn’t have any trouble getting your head around its Zen-like trafffic-directing gameplay. Accessibility has been rather masterfully welded to a relatively complex, punishing task, here. We dare say it might be difficult to think of your own ventures out into the city centre the same way ever again. After all, Urban Flow will quickly make you an expert at directing traffic — if only real people would pay attention!
