NEO: The World Ends With You may not have met Square Enix’s sales expectations, but if enough fans voice their support for a sequel, we may get another entry.

That’s according to producer Tomohiko Hirano, who told Nintendo Life that Square Enix has made no decisions about the IP and its future, but there is plenty of material worth exploring further that he’d like to dig into. However, it has to make business sense for the publisher, who revealed in its latest earnings report that NEO: The World Ends With You‘s commercial performance didn’t exactly match its critical success.

“Frankly speaking, nothing has been decided in terms of a next installment,” Hirano told Nintendo Life. “However, as a game based on an actual city, there are still many areas that we still haven’t been able to bring to life in the games, so a part of me wants to realize that in some way. If players convey their passion for the game to us, our company may decide to let us make a sequel!”

For what it’s worth, Square Enix did acknowledge that NEO: The World Ends With You was received well by players, so there’s some hope that a sequel could fare better sales-wise.

In PlayStation LifeStyle’s review of the game, Alanna Lataillade praised NEO: The World Ends With You for its combat and environment. However, she felt like it didn’t welcome newcomers to the series, which might be part of the reason it didn’t do well in terms of sales.
