Update [Mon 25th Apr, 2022 16:45 BST] Earlier today, the official Pokémon GO Twitter account tweeted a brief clip of the Mega Evolution symbol transforming from its monochrome look to something much more colourful and in-keeping with the main game’s Mega symbol.

Fans have been speculating what will happen to the much-criticised Mega Evolution system in the game, but this seems to confirm that Niantic are working on changing things:

Fans have replied to the below tweet, likely with the knowledge from PokéMiners data mining, that this indicates that the Mega Evolution system will indeed be getting an update. Mega Legendary Raids will be coming in, which will be a new tier of Mega Raid. The PokéMiners also found code for Mega Kangaskhan and Mega Latios and Latias back in March, so it’s likely we’ll be getting one of these very soon.

Original article [Wed 6th Apr, 2022 17:30 BST] Pokémon GO hasn’t been without its hiccups over the years despite its huge success. One of the more ongoing problems has been fans’ issues with Mega Evolutions. Introduced back in 2020 and taken right from generation 6’s Pokémon X and Y, this mechanic is a temporary evolution method that changes your Pocket Monster’s appearance, stats, and sometimes even typing.

When it debuted in the mobile game, players were required to use Mega Energy to unlock the ability, but this only lasted four hours, so you also had to keep using it to maintain it beyond that. Unfortunately, this resource was handed out too infrequently so players quickly ran out. And while this has been fixed to some degree, you still need to go through Mega Raids and keep topped up on Mega Energy.

Reported by our friends and Eurogamer, a known group of Pokémon data-miners, the PokéMiners, have uncovered a new levelling system for Mega Evolutions in the game’s code.

The suggestion is that the new system will be much closer to the systems in place for buddies and friends, where every level will give you a new perk. It also looks like new perks might be added, too! And you’ll even be able to Mega Evolve a Pokémon who loves you for free on occasion. That’s the power of love, hey?

While Niantic hasn’t confirmed anything yet, the PokéMiners are a pretty reliable group, so it may only be a matter of time before we officially find out what these improvements are like.

Let us know what you think of these potential changes and any of the other updates in the comments.
