During Capcom’s show yesterday, they released the PS5 upgrades for Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. While most players who own the PS4 versions of the games are now enjoying their free updates, those who picked up Resident Evil 7 through the PS Plus Collection have missed out as the PS5 upgrade is not applicable to their version.

While yesterday’s release of the Resident Evil 7: Biohazard PS5 upgrade was a bit of a surprise, it also wasn’t entirely unexpected seeing as all three games had appeared on the PSN backend a few days earlier. All players who have purchased a copy of Resident Evil 7 or Resident Evil 7 Gold Edition on PS4, either digitally or on disc, can claim their free PS5 upgrade. However, IGN has noticed that those who claimed the game through the PS Plus Collection cannot get the free upgrade and will have to actually purchase the game if they want to play it on PS5. This isn’t an unusual situation seeing as the same happened to those who grabbed Final Fantasy VII Remake on PS4 through PS Plus, although Square Enix eventually back-pedalled on that decision. Resident Evil 7 fans will surely be hoping Capcom does the same.

The PS5 free upgrade adds “cutting-edge features” like ray-tracing, support for higher frame rates, 3D audio, and DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers. Those who have played the game on PS4 can also transfer their save file to the PS5 version, although some have been reporting trouble with trophies not unlocking in their entirety, a situation that isn’t terribly uncommon for next-gen upgrades like this.

In other news, the God of War Ragnarok release date saga continues onwards after Santa Monica’s creative director Cory Barlog waded in. Elsewhere, the Capcom and Bandai Namco PS Plus classic PlayStation games are currently not available for separate purchase.
