Apart from the new “competitive play” trailer at the 2022 Pokémon World Championships, Pokémon Company president Tsunekazu Ishihara also announced the new trading card series.
In a separate video, Atsushi Nagashima – Pokémon TCG Game Director at Creatures Inc. – explained how the teaser video was a “world-first sneak peek” at the new Scarlet & Violet TCG series, launching in 2023.
Here’s exactly what he had to say about the video above:
The “ex” logo that was shown in the video symbolizes this coming series. The design depicts refined strength and evokes vitality. Pokémon ex will appear in each Stage of Evolution: as Basic, Stage 1, and Stage 2 Pokémon. They will have high HP as well as powerful abilities and attacks. However, knocking out one of these Pokémon will let you take two Prize cards.
Although getting a Pokémon ex knocked out by your opponent can cost you two Prize cards, Stage 2 Pokémon in particular have the power to turn the tide of battle in an instant, with high HP rivaling that of Pokémon VMAX and powerful attacks that require little energy. Strong Stage 2 Pokémon ex are just one example of how the play environment will become more diverse, allowing for a variety of Pokémon to shine.
Additionally, an important theme of Scarlet & Violet series is “comebacks,” and we plan to introduce Pokémon, Trainer cards and Energy cards that can turn the tide of the battle this way. In this upcoming series, you’ll see both familiar Pokémon and newly discovered Pokémon appear as Pokémon ex, so please stay tuned for more information.
The Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet Series will further expand the game as the new standard for the Pokémon TCG and will shake up the game in many ways. Please continue to look forward to the evolution of the Pokémon TCG.
