The Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty DLC expansion has been revealed by developer CD Projekt Red, with it only set to launch on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC — meaning it has ditched last-gen consoles like the PS4.
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty will be PS5-only
Cyberpunk 2077 launched with a number of issues on the PS4 and Xbox One, with CDPR struggling to optimize it for last-gen consoles and causing Sony to pull it from the PlayStation Network storefront as a result. Due to these issues, CDPR lost significant market value. While updates improved the experience, the game was still at its worst when played on last-gen hardware, so its developer has decided to drop the old consoles altogether.
Phantom Liberty’s debut trailer, revealed today during a Night City Wire livestream held by CDPR, revealed that the expansion would be playable on current-gen consoles, PC, and Google Stadia only. The press release for the game added: “Phantom Liberty is scheduled to release in 2023 for PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox Series X|S, and Stadia.”

Cyberpunk 2077 didn’t have a PS5 release, with it launching on PS4 and then receiving a current-gen update in February 2022. This brought with it some significant improvements specifically for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and to a less extent the Xbox Series S, including a performance mode that allowed for consistent 60 FPS with dynamic 4K scaling. However, even this update had its issues at launch.
The Phantom Liberty expansion stars a whole new cast of characters who will be introduced to protagonist V, while Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as Johnny Silverhand. It will take place in a brand new location set within the game’s world. Cyberpunk 2077 will also receive a free update later today that ties in with its Edgerunners Netflix series.
