Rare: “we just kept talking until we made [GoldenEye 007’s return] happen”

By now, you’re more than likely aware of the news that GoldenEye 007 would be added to the Nintendo 64 retro library that is currently available on Nintendo Switch Online. However, thanks to remarks by Rare studio head Craig Duncan, we now know more info on how this happened.

According to Duncan, they originally tried to make GoldenEye’s return happen in 2015, when they were developing Rare Replay. Unfortunately, “things involving licenses and published games just have complexity”. Despite the setback, Duncan says that “there were lots of conversations, lots of conversations with our friends at Nintendo, the folks at MGM, the folks at Xbox, and we just kept talking until we made it happen”.
