The closure of Babylon’s Fall less than a year after its release hasn’t deterred PlatinumGames. Despite the game being one of the biggest flops in the history of the industry, the studio’s plans to produce more live service titles haven’t changed “at all.”
PlatinumGames CEO says studio plans are still the same
In an interview with VGC, PlatinumGames CEO Atsushi Inaba stated the studio had learned lessons from the failure of Babylon’s Fall that will be valuable in the future. However, it’ll continue to pursue live service development despite fan backlash. Inaba stated:
There’s a lot that we learned from this experience, and it’s not changed our future plans or outlook moving forward regarding doing live service games at all. Live service games are definitely something we do want to do and put our effort in moving forward.
Inaba alluded to some of the issue with Babylon’s Fall was because of the studio’s arrangement with Square Enix. However, he didn’t go into detail as he’s “not able to comment on certain areas of games developed with our partners.” He also stated that PlatinumGames wasn’t content with having to constantly court and please publishers and apologized to fans of Babylon’s Fall for its short life span.
Hopefully, as the studio expands its self-publishing efforts, it’ll have more success. However, companies that ignore their core audience in favor of rampant monetization rarely do.
