The full two-minute The Last of Us HBO official trailer has finally dropped today, almost out of nowhere. So as not to spoil anything, let’s just say that it uses the right song in the middle of the trailer, edited perfectly for the video’s climax. Fans will know what I mean.

Beyond that, the trailer for the upcoming TV series looks incredible and recreates plenty of shots that are recognizable from the first game. It also confirms the January 15, 2022 release date, which was prematurely revealed at the start of November.

The Last of Us HBO trailer summarizes the game’s overarching plot

The trailer, especially for new viewers who don’t know much about the video games, effectively summarizes the reason why Joel (Pedro Pascal) is escorting Ellie (Bella Ramsey) west across the treacherous American landscape in the first place. Ellie cracks jokes and says she isn’t scared, but Joel is far more reserved and afraid of the clickers out there.

We already know quite a bit about the cast of the HBO series, with Nick Offerman as Bill (who we see briefly in this trailer), Storm Reid as Riley, Keivonn Woodard as Sam, and Lamar Johnson as Henry. Voice actors Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker, who were part of the original game, also show up in very quickly edited shots in the trailer. There are also new characters in the show, like Mr. Adler and Perry, so it looks like it won’t follow the video game exactly (and it really shouldn’t).
