In a move both surprising and not surprising at all, Nvidia is reportedly slashing the price of its ill-fated RTX 4080 soon. The GPU hasn’t been met with a warm reception at retail, as people think its price-to-performance ratio is simply unacceptable. In addition to flagging sales, it’s also generating anger towards Nvidia for price gouging. The company will apparently remedy this situation soon, though the GPU’s new price is unknown. The timing is interesting as well, as AMD’s RDNA3 cards launch on Dec. 13.
Reports of the impending price cut appeared on Chinese media, via Wccftech. It says Nvidia will be “adjusting” the RTX 4080’s price soon, not a reaction to AMD’s offerings but for its own sake. Either way, nobody is buying it at its current price of $1,199 and upwards. It’s gotten so bad that e-tailers like Newegg have stopped issuing refunds to scalpers who find themselves unable to offload them on eBay. This has caused these benevolent beings to begin offering the cards at MSRP. However, even that is too high for a lot of folks, as partner boards can range in price from $1,350 to $1,500—you’re much better off just getting an RTX 4090, if you can.

Although the sources say that Nvidia isn’t cutting the price to blunt AMD’s launch, we find that a little hard to believe given the animosity between the two rivals. AMD tried to pour cold water on the RTX 4080’s launch just a few weeks ago. It wouldn’t surprise us if Nvidia announced the price cut on Dec. 12 or 13.
Soon, Nvidia will face a tough situation with the upcoming Radeon RX 7900 XTX, which costs $200 less than the RTX 4080. The XT version costs $300 less, so assuming those cards fall in the range of the 4080, we can see Nvidia at least matching them. That would mean a $200 price drop to $999, putting it in direct competition with the XTX card.

Nvidia royally screwed up with the RTX 4080 series. It had to “unlaunch” the 12GB version in response to the online uproar it caused by releasing benchmarks for it. Nvidia claims it realized it was named incorrectly, as it offered two RTX 4080s with wildly different specs. Both can be true, but it was a surprising misstep for the company. Now the RTX 4080 is a confirmed dud as well, even though it’s a very powerful GPU. “Great product, wrong price” was the sentiment of most reviewers. It appears Nvidia has now come to this same conclusion.
