The Unreal video game franchise is one of the longest and most well-regarded first-person shooter series in gaming history. According to gaming industry icon Cliff Bleszinski, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney may have plans for the series.

What did Cliff Bleszinski say about a possible Unreal remaster?

Speaking to ComingSoon, Bleszinski — who served as a designer on Unreal, Unreal Tournament, and various other Unreal Tournament sequels — acknowledged the fan demand of a remastered version of the 1998 game.

Conversations surrounding an Unreal remaster popped up earlier this year, when Nightdive Studios — who have a history of obtaining rights to abandonware games and updating them, and recently released System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition said that Bleszinski had actually contacted Sweeney about letting the studio remaster the game.

According to Bleszinski, though, Sweeney may have other plans.

“Well, there’s a whole Twitter conversation about this where Nightdive Studios was offering to remaster the first Unreal,” said Bleszinski. “I reposted it, blah, blah, blah. Nightdive emailed Tim Sweeney and Tim Sweeney has longer distance plans for Unreal, which I’m not going to disclose because that’s his business and his IP, but the thing is, when Tencent bought out my shares at Epic and I realized I had enough money to not have to argue with programmers about creative decisions anymore and I was happily engaged to my now wonderful wife — well, she’s always been wonderful, but anyway, the last thing I said as I did my departing speech at Epic was, ‘Please remaster the first Unreal.’”
