Alongside releasing a major firmware update on the PS5 yesterday, Sony Interactive Entertainment quietly released PS4 system software update 11.40. While it’s not anything significant like its PS5 counterpart, the update does improve system usability.
PS4 system update 11.40 patch notes (released March 13, 2024)
Brief patch notes courtesy of Sony are as follows:
- We’ve improved system software performance and stability.
- We’ve improved the messages and usability on some screens.
Performance and stability are likely code words for Sony combating hackers. The company releases similar updates on the PS3 to this day, rendering jailbreaks useless, so update at your own risk if you’ve modified your console. The PS4 has not received a major system update since version 10.00 as support winds down.
For those who missed it, the PS5’s latest system update exited beta yesterday and is now available for all players. It improves the DualSense and DualSense Edge features to produce a higher volume sound as well as improve mic input quality. Elsewhere, the PS5’s power indicator now comes with adjustable brightness, and there are new features for Parties and Share Screen.
PS5’s previous big update gave users the ability to mute the system startup beep — a long-awaited feature by many.
