Anyone looking to trade in their preowned PS5 may be in luck. Video game retailer GameStop announced players can get a pretty penny for their console by taking advantage of its current trade offers.

How much is GameStop giving for preowned PS5s?

On Twitter, user @JohnnyGaming9 shared a picture of his GameStop receipt which showed how much money he received for trading in his preowned PS5. Unlike the valueless disc copy of Destiny 2 living in my closet, the user got a whopping $410 for his console. That is a lot considering the public perception of the retailer’s typical trade in values. GameStop took to Twitter to confirm that they are indeed paying up to $410 for preowned PS5. The key words here are “up to,” as players may earn less depending on a few criteria.

How do customers get the most value from their preowned PS5?

So, how does one get $410 for a PS5? Currently, both the base and slim versions of the console with a disc drive are valued at $357.50. This means players who want to trade in a PS5 digital edition will earn less. The current value for that edition is $330. This also assumes the customer has all the accessories that are included with the console, including the power cable, HDMI cable, and controller. If any of those are missing, the value does go down as they typically find a replacement in store on the shelf. The customer must have a Pro membership, which gives 10% extra for any trade in. Lastly, there is a promo that gives $25 extra for PS5 trade ins. This promo only lasts until September 14, 2024.

To run it down, here is everything players need to get that $410 trade in value:

  • PS5 console with controller, power cord, and HDMI cable
  • Pro membership which costs $25 a year to get 10% extra trade credit
  • Trade in the console by September 14, 2024 since the $25 extra for console promo ends on that date.

It should be noted that the $25 extra trade credit for preowned PS5 consoles only offers trade credit. Customers can’t get cash for the trade in. Opting for cash will nullify the promo and customers will receive less for the trade in.

As seen in the above tweet, the recent interest in preowned PS5 trade in values may be due to the recent PS5 Pro reveal. Players who decide to take advantage of GameStop’s offer will have to wait quite awhile to play Sony’s console. The PS5 Pro launches on November 7, 2024. Preorders open on September 26, 2024.
