PlayStation has recently made a push to bring unique live service experiences to PS5. However, after the great Concord erasure of 2024, fans may be questioning if Sony Interactive Entertainment plans to continue this push, and pricing these games at $40. It seems SIE’s Bungie will follow suit with Marathon when it inevitably launches.

What is the potential Marathon PS5 price?

Bungie’s PvP extraction shooter Marathon will reportedly cost $40 according to The Game Post. Several sources have told the publication the developer is targeting the pay to play premium model rather than go free to play. The publication also states it is likely discussions between Bungie and Sony surrounding its pricing occurred after Concord’s abrupt shut down.

Despite Concord’s short life span, it isn’t too surprising Bungie is opting for a $40 price tag for Marathon. After all, the developer has experience successfully shipping a live service game at a premium with both Destiny and Destiny 2. Additionally, unlike Concord, the extraction shooter has a beloved studio attached to it, so that may help.

Bungie has been conducting Marathon playtests with internal teams, streamers, and content creators The Game Post reports. Sources say feedback on the upcoming game is generally positive. One source said the shooter feels “worth” the price tag.

Bungie is currently hard at work on Marathon. Sources told IGN earlier this year the developer is “pouring resources into pushing Marathon out the door.” During that time, Bungie replaced Christopher Barrett as game director with Joe Ziegler, who served in the same role on Valorant.

Alongside Marathon, Bungie is working on two new Destiny 2 expansions. Codename: Apollo is the first of the duo, and will usher in a new era for the popular first person shooter.

An official release date for Marathon has yet to be revealed. It is currently rumored to launch sometime in 2025.
