Despite the controversy surrounding Chinese developer Game Science, Black Myth: Wukong has sold millions of copies since its August launch. With its console version currently only available on PS5, it stands to reason this would help Sony’s overall game sales. Sony confirms this notion is a fact, as it points to the Journey to the West inspired RPG contributing to PS5’s significant growth in third-party software sales.

Black Myth: Wukong aids in significant growth in PS5 game sales

In Sony’s Q2 FY2024 Consolidated Financial Results, the company specifically mentions Black Myth: Wukong for PS5’s success in third-party software sales. While it wasn’t specifically mentioned by name, it is pretty obvious the “action RPG title from China” is the Game Science release considering its impressive sales milestones. It also mentions a “new sports title” aiding in sales, most likely referring to EA Sports College Football 25

“As for third-party software, sales significantly grew due to contributions from solid franchise titles as well as hit new IP, including a new sports title and an action RPG title from China,” says Sony.

Black Myth: Wukong is one of the best selling games of 2024. Since its launch, it has sold over 18 million copies. It has also remained one of the top downloaded PS5 games in both the U.S./Canada region, and Europe for the month of October.

Although it hasn’t been formally announced, DLC for Black Myth: Wukong is set to release near the 2025 Chinese New Year. An exact date is not given, but the window suggests it should launch around January 29, 2025.

Just a couple weeks ago, Game Science and PM Studios announced the Black Myth: Wukong PS5 physical edition. PM Studios confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that the base game will be on the disc, and an internet connection is not required to play. However, the Deluxe Edition voucher code does require internet to redeem. It was just announced the physical edition launches December 12, 2024.
