Xbox boss Phil Spencer thinks that mid-gen hardware upgrades like PS5 Pro no longer offer anything unique, and are unnecessary. The executive appeared in a series of interviews this week, and in at least two interviews that we’ve spotted, he suggested that the PS5 Pro’s benefits aren’t as significant as its price tag.
Mid-gen refresh like PS5 Pro won’t grow the market, says Xbox’s Phil Spencer
In an interview with the RollingStone, Spencer was quizzed about Xbox’s plans for a mid-gen upgrade like PS5 Pro, in response to which he said that technology has advanced to a point where it’s becoming harder to show significant improvements in the middle of a console’s life cycle.
“Does a new device really give you a unique experience on screen in some way? [It’s] less like the old days, going from the original Xbox to 360; that was standard definition to high definition. Now, [it’s] harder to show the benefits,” Spencer said.
In a separate interview with Bloomberg, Spencer appeared to throw some shade that Sony, arguing that “we’re not going to grow the market with $1,000 consoles.” “To reach new players, we need to be creative and adaptive of new business models, new devices, new ways of access,” Spencer opined.
