It looks like Sony had a lot more PlayStation live service games in the pipeline than we assumed, if a new leak is any indication. It’s not uncommon for video game companies to dabble into a variety of projects, but this leak does raise some concerns about what many view as an excessive push towards games-as-a-service (GaaS).
A number of PlayStation studios tasked with live service games
Folks over at TheGamePost have uncovered concept art and designs from at least two unannounced live service games in development at Firesprite. One of the games is said to have a post-apocalyptic setting, and the other was supposed to be a sci-fi battle royale game.
We won’t share any of the images here to avoid a copyright strike, but they can be viewed over at TheGamePost. A variety of weapon designs were allegedly found in a former Firesprite artist’s portfolio, which also briefly describes the projects. According to the report, the post-apocalyptic game was canceled and the sci-fi battle royale IP was handed over to another developer after being sold.
Firesprite was also rumored to be working on a Twisted Metal live service game, which was allegedly canceled. Sony seems to have tasked a number of PlayStation Studios with little to no live service background with similar projects, which is cause for concern after the Concord disaster.
Besides Firesprite and Firewalk live service endeavors, Haven Studios is working on Fairgame$. Elsewhere, Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us multiplayer was canceled, Bungie is working on Marathon, Bend Studio is reportedly working on a multiplayer game, Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man multiplayer game was reportedly canceled, and a Horizon multiplayer game is allegedly in the works.
