I was too old to get caught in the craze for the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers back in the day. In fact, the only thing I can remember about the TV series is that the fights were incredibly camp, and the theme tune was stupidly catchy.

But now it’s time to recapture those glory days with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind from Digital Eclipse. Promising to bring all the action from the TV series onto our consoles, the question I phrased was this: Can the madness translate to a modern audience, or is it better left in the past? Strap on your skin tight suit and let’s go!

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Ritas Rewind – battling on

There’s no doubt that Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind is a real mixed bag, with levels that are side-on scrolling beat ‘em up in style, while others have us not only piloting our individual Dinozord, but also crewing the Megazord in massive boss fights! If you don’t know what these things are, well, join the club.

What these levels have in common though is a lovely, hand drawn pixel art style to the graphics, and so there has been a real effort to serve up some tasty fan service. Or so we are led to believe. In fact, the visuals represent the enemies and heroes that everyone will be familiar with, whilst the animation is very good indeed. The different styles of level work well, with into the screen stages mixed in amongst the side scrolling stuff. The moments piloting Megazord are particularly good, with dodging and punching all presented from a first person perspective.

The sound is equally good, and I did catch myself singing along with the theme tune, I have to admit. The fighting sound effects, as well as the elements that build in other stages, are all bang on and fit perfectly with the action. Even the story, presented in the animated style and with some limited voice overs is presented well, and this means that playing Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind is like stepping back in time to the arcades of the 90’s.

Speaking of story and time travel, it is interesting to see how it ties into the narrative of the game. Rita, a long time nemesis of the Power Rangers team, is reincarnated as Robo Rita, escaping the Rangers to travel back in time to team up with her earlier self. So, the Power Rangers in the present day have to deal with two Ritas, and all the enemies that she can summon from across the timeline of the TV series. Can a collection of teenagers, who all happen to be expert martial artists, stop this time travelling menace, or will the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers finally be defeated? Well, that’s up to you and three friends to discover!

Fan of the show? You’ll love this.

Yep, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind supports up to four player co-op, with each player picking a different Ranger to play as. Playing online is a pretty smooth experience, and while servers aren’t massively populated, you should have no trouble getting a game. And if you can’t, there’s local multiplayer to enjoy instead. Whether online or local, the multiplayer works very well indeed.

Whichever Ranger you choose affects what else you do, as each colour Ranger has a different Dinozord to ride around in; and some of them are easier to use than others. Pink Ranger, for instance, controls the Pterodactyl Dinozord, and being able to fly is a big advantage! Still, you pick your favourite Ranger and let rip. Whoever you choose, fighting your way through the levels is a challenge, as even on easy difficulty it is quite hard, as it should be for a 90’s style game. Luckily, there are continues available, should you be as rubbish as I am, and eventually you will get to a boss fight.

As bosses are close to being defeated, they grow, a lot of the time, forcing us to give chase in our vehicles. After shooting them a bit more, the Megazord is needed to finally punch these giant bosses into submission. Punching builds up a meter (and getting hit reduces the bar, so try to avoid that!) and when it is full, the Power Sword can be summoned and the boss finally dispatched. The combat is extremely good fun, in a 90’s style, whilst the variety of the action is more than enough to keep you going back for more.

A real love letter

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind is a real love letter to the 90’s, in both style of game and content. This is clearly aimed at fans of the TV series, but even if you are unfamiliar, you’ll still have a great time. The sheer variety of styles available is impressive and taking out enemies dragged from the Power Rangers universe is good fun.

If you like the Power Rangers, or have a hankering for the 90’s, then this is the game for you.
