It was recently reported that live service projects from Sony Interactive Entertainment‘s Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games were canceled. In a recent episode of podcast Game Mess Decides, industry insider Jeff Grubb claims Concord is to blame.

Notable gaming insider claims Sony is “reassessing every single project” after Concord flop

During the episode, Grubb reports the Bend Studios and Bluepoint Games live service game cancelations are due to Concord’s tumultuous launch in which servers shut down just two weeks after its release. He also claims Sony is currently “reassessing every single project” with its current live service slate under the most scrutiny.

“This happened because of Concord, like this should be clear, that’s what I’ve been told,” said Grubb.

“Sony is shell-shocked from Concord, and now they’re going around to every studio and they’re reassessing every single project, and if it’s a live-service project, it has a lot of friction going against it preventing it from getting a chance to actually come out.”

“And it is almost certain that they won’t be able to get a greenlight on a live service project, and they know that,” Grubb continued.

While this is probably good news to some of the PlayStation players out there, this does pose a bit of a problem for developers. As Grubb mentions, under Sony’s live service push, studios had a “pathway” for funding from the company. It may be a bit more difficult to get funding from Sony for something more traditional.

Before the cancelations, Bluepoint Games were working on a God of War multiplayer game. Details on Bend Studio’s live service project are not yet public. Sony did confirm that it is working with both studios to figure out its next projects. While it’s good to see this not resulting in another studio shutting its doors, it could mean we won’t see anything from both of these studios potentially until next generation.
