Fans are expressing concerns about the future of Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games following the cancellation of their projects. Sony has confirmed that both PlayStation Studios were working on games-as-a-service (GaaS), one of which was a God of War multiplayer game in development at Bluepoint.

Future of Bend Studio and Bluepoint uncertain as Sony’s live service push implodes

As reported by Bloomberg, Sony has given reassurances that neither Bluepoint — which it acquired in 2021 — nor Bend Studio will be closed, but stopped short of discussing potential layoffs that tend to occur following project cancellations.

But what’s particularly concerning is that Sony has confirmed that it’s still working with both studios to determine what their next projects will be, indicating that we might not see anything from either of the two talented teams in this generation.

Fans are understandably concerned. Sony has had multiple live service disasters over the last year alone, all of which came with significant financial implications. Many are rightfully wondering why Sony hasn’t thought of reviving its existing multiplayer IP as part of its GaaS efforts.

Fans aren’t wrong. Warhawk, MAG, and SOCOM, are just three of the many IPs Sony can attempt to revive if it really wants pursue live service. At this point in time, older IPs seem like safer bets than what the company is coming up with.

If Concord is any indication, Sony still hasn’t figured out what multiplayer fans really want.
