While the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita Stores didn’t close earlier this year, this doesn’t mean Sony isn’t starting to wind down their operations on these platforms. The company has just released another important notice regarding PlayStation products and services, this time detailing how payment methods like Paypal, credit cards and debit cards can no longer be used to purchase digital content on the PS3 and Vita Stores from the end of October.

The ability to use “a payment method such as PayPal”, credit cards and debit cards to pay for content on the PS3 and Vita stores will come to an end on October 27. After this point, players will only be able to use funds from their wallet to buy content on these two platforms. These restrictions will also apply to content purchased in-game on PS3 and Vita; players will only be able to use their wallet funds to buy DLC and add-ons.

Funds can be added to players’ wallets through PlayStation Store gift cards. Alternatively, Paypal, credit cards, debit cards and other payment methods can be used to add funds to the wallet on PC, mobile, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. These funds can then be used on any platform. Game codes and subscription vouchers will also work without a problem.

This latest news is the latest in what has been a turbulent year for the PS3 and Vita. Sony initially announced the closure of both stores and the PSP store to take place during the summer. After a loud public outcry, Sony backtracked on this decision and decided to keep the PS3 and Vita stores open for the forseeable future. The PSP store wasn’t quite so lucky, closing on July 2 as planned, although PSP games are still available for purchase through the PS3 and Vita stores. While the Vita store remains open, Sony also closed submissions for new games. This led to the last ever Vita games being released during the summer while those that couldn’t meet the deadline were cancelled.
