Beyond Good and Evil 2 has been in development hell for years. The road so far has not been smooth and if the latest rumor is to be believed, it’s only set to get worse. According to VGC writer Tom Henderson, the game “doesn’t fit with Ubisoft’s future ambitions and goals with future titles.” Many believe it to be only a matter of time before it’s canceled completely.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 has apparently been “suffering a development crisis from a lack of creative direction” since it first went into development back in 2007. It had been in pre-production for a year before being approved by Ubisoft in 2008. Since then, Beyond Good and Evil 2 has changed direction. Originally intended to be a sequel to Beyond Good & Evil, it was reworked to become a prequel—and effectively a completely different title. Unfortunately things were made worse when director Michel Ancel left the gaming industry amidst allegations of toxic behavior.

Other issues that have surrounded the project included the use of Hindu imagery, the requirement for a constant online internet connection, and the controversial practice of using work from the external creative community without mention of reimbursement for their efforts. Now Beyond Good and Evil 2’s main problem is that it “currently doesn’t fit with Ubisoft’s future ambitions and goals with future titles.” Its constant issues and descent into development hell have led to some christening the project as Skull & Bones 2.0—referencing the other troubled Ubisoft game that has yet to see the light of day. Beyond Good and Evil 2 hasn’t been canceled by Ubisoft, and Ubisoft Montpellier was even recruiting for development roles on the project as recently as July. However, “some developers believe it’s a matter of time” before the inevitable happens and Beyond Good and Evil 2 is canceled for good.

Henderson did add that he’s found it difficult to corroborate this information, so be sure to take the rumor with a pinch of salt as always.  Ubisoft has yet to comment on the rumors.
