Now available on Xbox, PlayStation, PC and Switch, COGEN: Sword of Rewind follows the journey of Kohaku – a girl who mysteriously awakens in some factory, in front of the legendary ExeBreaker sword. As well as having the traditional massive sharp bit attached to it, which is always handy, the ExeBreaker also grants Kohaku the ability to rewind time via the Ouroborus System. Anyone being reminded of the great Super Time Force right now?

Kohaku must form an alliance with the ExeBreaker to fight through wherever she has awoken, and eventually through her home-town – the since destroyed Cogen City. Why is the city in ruins? Why has Kohaku seemingly been kidnapped? Where can I get my own hands on this amazing sword? So many questions, and so little time.

Quite literally so little time, in fact, as every time Kohaku falls victim to one of the robotic enemies she will encounter, instead of restarting as you typically would in a side-scrolling 2D hack ‘n’ slash title, you have the ability to rewind up to three seconds of time. In such a fast-paced game as this, that’s all you may need to re-assess your options, and take down the enemy on the second go. Rewind, rethink, redo, as developers Gemdrops so succinctly put it.

Of course, you may not require this rewind, and instead can merrily go around deflecting projectiles, platforming over obstacles and attacking with your sword in real time. But with Kohaku’s limited health, it would be a real accomplishment to never utilise the power of the rewind.

If you are in the market for a new action-packed action platformer, and possess the reaction times of a cat, then COGEN: Sword of Rewind is most definitely the one for you. You can pick up a copy of the game for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One for £20.99 via the Xbox Store. Alternatively, the game is also available right now for PS5, PS4, PC and Switch. In any instance, make sure to check out our full review of the game when it drops.

Both mystery and mayhem await her, but with the power of ExeBreaker’s Ouroboros System on her side, nothing will stop her from discovering the truth of what happened to her beloved home.
