Sony Interactive Entertainment’s president and chief executive officer, Jim Ryan, has confirmed that PlayStation Studios are making “several” live service games and its acquisition of Bungie will support their efforts.

In a press release announcing the acquisition, Ryan wrote that Sony is keen to utilize Bungie’s experience in live services. Hermen Hulst, Head of PlayStation Studios, added that both Bungie and Sony will benefit greatly from the partnership. Sony will especially take advantage of the Halo and Destiny maker’s technical expertise and experience of building “highly engaged communities.”

Over 25 PlayStation Studios games are in development

Sony revealed last year that PlayStation Studios teams are working on more than 25 titles, almost half of which are new IP. The company has been tight-lipped about what it’s working on, but perusing job descriptions reveals that Jade Raymond’s Haven Studios and former Call of Duty developers’ Deviation Games are both working on PlayStation exclusives with live service elements.

“New additions will help us extend the reach of our IP, develop exciting new games, and further leverage the technical capabilities of PS5 through knowledge sharing and collaboration,” Hulst said yesterday. “I believe that Bungie joining the PlayStation family will increase the capabilities of PlayStation Studios, and of Bungie, and achieve our vision of expanding PlayStation to hundreds of millions of gamers. For game creators, that’s always our goal: to bring our vision to as many people as possible.”

Opinion: Sony could certainly use Bungie’s shooter expertise

Zarmena writes… We’ve heard ample times over the years that PlayStation lacks in the shooter department. With Bungie on its side, Sony can take advantage of 30 years of experience in this field. However, it’s unclear what kind of live service games Sony’s considering and if they are even shooters. One thing’s for sure, the company’s making every effort to expand its horizons.

In other news, PS5 and PS4 Discord integration is being rolled out and this month’s State of Play is all about Gran Turismo 7.
