Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge finally launched on the Switch last week and is, by all accounts, a roaring success, pairing slick gameplay with gorgeous pixelated visuals for a truly modern take on the classic beat-em-up genre.

Developer Tribute Games clearly paid extra attention to making sure our favourite heroes in a half shell looked and felt authentic, but it seems it also went the extra mile in paying homage to the classic fighting games of yore. As highlighted by Twitter user @ryugainai, there are multiple animations in the game that look remarkably similar to move sets in well known fighting games like Street Fighter Alpha, Samurai Shodown, and Fatal Fury.

The pessimists among us might wonder why Tribute Games didn’t just create completely original animations for all of the turtles’ move sets, but in our opinion, we appreciate the humble nods to the fighting games that clearly inspired Shredder’s Revenge. It’s a perfect example of the love and passion that went into this project, and how much the developers at Tribute Games love the fighting genre.

In other news, if you’re enjoying Shredder’s Revenge and are perhaps looking forward to some extra DLC, you might want to temper your expectations. Although publisher Dotemu hasn’t ruled it out entirely, there are currently no plans to add extra content to the game.

What do you think of the similarities between the animations in Shredder’s Revenge and that of classic fighting games? Share your thoughts below!
