Ubisoft’s latest earnings call contained some bad news for the company. The poorly-received Ghost Recon Frontline has been canceled alongside three other titles, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora has been delayed. Given the company’s spotty release calendar, constant delays to previously announced games, and recent history of scandal, many fans worry this news means Ubisoft is in dire straits.

Ubisoft delays Avatar and cancels Ghost Recon Frontline

The cancellation of Ghost Recon Frontline comes as a surprise because Ubisoft typically doesn’t take the hint when fans pan one of its many terrible ideas. When Frontline was revealed in October 2021 to be a battle royale that further diluted the series identity, fans immediately responded negatively. Sentiment for the game was so poor that the devs canceled the scheduled closed test, and in April, it was rumored the game was being rebooted. However, Ubisoft has decided to scrap it entirely, which is probably the right choice.

The Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora delay is arguably the more significant hit to Ubisoft, as it’s received quite a bit of hype. It was initially scheduled to release sometime in 2022 but has been bumped to 2023 or 2024. It was first announced in March 2017, which means it could potentially have spent seven years in development before release.

In addition to the above details, Ubisoft also revealed that it had canceled Splinter Cell VR and two unannounced titles. However, even with these changes, Ubisoft’s release calendar is looking up for the latter half of 2022. Both Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope and Skull & Bones are launching in October and November, respectively. Hopefully, those will help improve Ubisoft’s prognosis in fans’ eyes and give the company the windfall it needs right now.
