Overwatch 2 has been available to play on multiple platforms, including the Nintendo Switch, for almost an entire year now, though it is worth noting that the game only left Early Access a week ago. Nevertheless, the game has been getting updated with a steady stream of content ever since.
One of the hurdles that Blizzard had to deal with during the game’s Early Access phase was PVE content. According to the devs, dealing with this on the Nintendo Switch was particularly difficult. Senior Game Designer Dylan Snyder said to Dexerto that “We had to develop new tools and systems to do a lot of memory clean up. For PVP maps, things are on all the time because players are around the whole time. But [for PVE] we had to do a lot of different tricks. “Basically, what I’ve been doing recently for the missions is making sure I’m closing off sections, unloading parts of the map, things like that that we don’t traditionally have to worry about for PVP”.
Still, despite the issues, Snyder says that “we want to support Switch”. It’s just that, according to Snyder, “that’s the biggest bottleneck we have. “The nice thing is if it runs on Switch, it’s going to run pretty well on everything else. So it’s almost a nice bottleneck we have, in a weird, roundabout way”. They said they were able to pull it off, but it wasn’t easy. Snyder even says that “It’s been a pretty big headache”.
